Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about our production tools for live events, touring, and studio work.
General
What is Hive Mind?
Hive Mind is a suite of browser-based production tools built for live-event professionals — touring musicians, production managers, FOH engineers, monitor engineers, lighting designers, and stage techs. Our flagship app, Stageplot, offers a free watermarked version with a paid tier for full access, while our standalone utilities (LTC Generator, Tap Tempo, Click Track Generator) are completely free with zero sign-ups and zero data collection.
Are the Hive Mind tools really free?
Our standalone tools — LTC Generator, Tap Tempo, and MIDI Click Track Generator — are 100% free with no usage limits, no watermarks, and no premium tier. Stageplot has a free watermarked version; full access is available for $3.99/mo or a $150 perpetual license. We built these tools because we needed them on the road and wanted to give back to the production community.
Do I need to create an account?
For the standalone tools (LTC Generator, Tap Tempo, Click Track Generator) — no account is needed. Open the URL, use the tool, done. For Stageplot, you will need to create an account to save your work, access the full feature set, and manage your subscription.
What browsers are supported?
All Hive Mind tools work in any modern browser — Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, and Opera — on desktop, tablet, and mobile. We recommend Chrome or Firefox for the best experience, especially for audio-related tools like the LTC Generator and Click Track Generator that rely on the Web Audio API.
Do the tools work offline?
The standalone tools require an initial page load over the internet, but once loaded, all processing happens locally in your browser. File generation (WAV, MIDI) is done entirely client-side — nothing is uploaded to a server. Stageplot requires an internet connection for account features, saving, and sharing.
Can I embed or redistribute these tools?
No. All Hive Mind tools and their source code are copyrighted. You may not embed, copy, redistribute, or host any of our tools on third-party websites. Please link directly to our official URLs if you'd like to share them with others.
What is the difference between a stage plot and a tech rider?
A stage plot is a visual, top-down diagram showing where each musician, instrument, amplifier, monitor, and DI box sits on stage. A tech rider is a written document that covers the full technical requirements: PA specifications, monitor mixes, lighting needs, power requirements, backline requests, and logistics. The stage plot is the map; the tech rider is the instruction manual. Most venues expect both. Read our full guide: How to Create a Stage Plot.
Stageplot Creator
What is Stageplot?
Stageplot (app.thehivemind.live) is a browser-based stage plot creator for bands, production managers, and venue techs. Design professional stage layouts with a drag-and-drop interface, add musicians, gear, monitors, mic positions, and DI boxes, then export as PNG, PDF, or save as a .plot file to share with collaborators.
Is Stageplot free?
Stageplot has a free version that includes watermarked exports and some features restricted. The full version is available for $3.99/month or a $150 one-time perpetual license, which unlocks unlimited stage plots, all export formats, and full feature access.
Can I save and share my stage plots?
Yes — export as PDF, PNG, or save as a .plot file that collaborators can open and edit. You can also share a link directly with venues, production companies, or your tour manager.
What elements can I add to a stage plot?
Musicians (with instrument labels and custom names), amplifiers, drum risers, keyboard stands, monitor wedges, DI boxes, mic stands, mic positions, power drops, sub snakes, audio snakes, risers, set pieces, barricades, and custom text labels. Each element is draggable, rotatable, and resizable.
How does Stageplot compare to other tools?
Stageplot is a modern, browser-based alternative to legacy desktop software — no downloads, no Java, no Flash. It's designed for speed: log in, build your plot, export or share a link, done. Check it out at stageplotpro.org.
LTC Timecode Generator
What is the LTC Timecode Generator?
Creates SMPTE Linear Timecode audio files as mono 16-bit WAV. Feed the output into a timecode reader, DAW, lighting console, or media server to sync playback, lighting cues, video, and automation.
What frame rates are supported?
23.976 fps, 24 fps, 25 fps (PAL/EBU), 29.97 fps drop-frame, 29.97 fps non-drop-frame, and 30 fps.
Can I generate multiple files at once?
Yes — batch mode supports up to 20 entries downloaded as a single ZIP file. Perfect for generating timecode for an entire show or festival run.
How do I use LTC in my show?
Route the WAV into a spare output on your playback rig (QLab, Ableton, Reaper). Feed into a timecode reader — grandMA2/grandMA3, ChamSys, or similar. The console chases the timecode and fires cues automatically.
Tap Tempo
What is the Tap Tempo tool?
Tap along with a song or live performance to calculate BPM instantly. Uses smoothed averaging across taps for accuracy and auto-resets after inactivity.
How accurate is the Tap Tempo?
After 4-6 taps you'll typically be within ±0.5 BPM. Uses weighted moving averages and trimmed means for maximum accuracy.
Can I use keyboard shortcuts?
Yes — spacebar, Enter, or any key triggers a tap. Works on desktop and mobile.
MIDI Click Track Generator
What is the MIDI Click Track Generator?
Creates downloadable MIDI click tracks with distinct downbeat and upbeat notes. Set BPM, time signature, and length — download a standard .mid file for any DAW.
What MIDI notes are used?
Downbeats use C1 (note 24) and upbeats use C#1 (note 25). Standard GM percussion mappings — reassign to any sound in your DAW after import.
Can I set odd time signatures?
Yes — any time signature from 1/4 through 15/4 and beyond. 4/4, 7/8, 5/4, 12/8, and more.
How do I import into my DAW?
Download the .mid file and drag it into your DAW timeline (Ableton, Logic, Reaper, Pro Tools, Cubase, FL Studio). Route the MIDI track to any click sound.
